The Amazing Lithium Difference - great for off-road caravans

Lead acid batteries were the first type of rechargeable battery, invented over 150 years ago.

The newer Lithium technology has become well proven for powering electronics – edging out the older NiCad rechargeable battery.
Mobile phones would be very limited without Lithium batteries!

  • You can use 80-90% of the rated capacity of a lithium battery bank, and occasionally more.
    If it was lead acid you would be wise to use just 30%-50%.
  • Laboratory results indicate that you could expect to see 1,500 to 3,000 cycles out of a well cared for Lithium battery bank. These are theoretical results as we haven’t used a battery long enough to see these number of cycles. In contrast, our experience on the life of the deep cycle AGM batteries, is around 600-900 cycles.
  • Lithium batteries charge at nearly 100% efficiency, compared to the 85% efficiency of most lead acid batteries. This is especially important when charging with solar. Theoretically, with lithium nearly every drop of sun you’re able to collect goes into your batteries. 
  • Lithium batteries can be “fast” charged to 100% of capacity.
    Unlike with lead acid, there is no need for an absorption phase to get the final 20% stored.
  • No Fears of “Sulphation”: Charging AGM batteries is fraught problems if you don’t manage to get to 100%.
    A failure to regularly fully charge Lithium batteries does not damage the batteries.
    In fact the batteries are best stored at 30-50% of their capacity!
  • A 20% charged Lithium battery provides nearly the same output voltage as an 80% charged battery. Whereas lead acid batteries have as much as a 40% loss of capacity at high current loads.
    In practice, we found that the 12V Airconditioning System would not function on AGM Batteries, but worked perfectly on Lithium Batteries.

But, there is a problem: The Lithium Nose Dive

Once lithium batteries are fully discharged, their voltage takes a sudden nose-dive. Completely discharging a lithium battery bank, possibly even once, can render your entire pack permanently dead. Inverters and chargers do not yet come standard with profiles for Lithium Batteries.
This is new and evolving technology, and not quite yet ready to be “plug and go” by in-experienced players.

We have been guided by advice from experts with defence experience of Lithium batteries in harsh environments using solar for charging. We have tested and retested the components used.

We made a fundamental decision to put safety as the number one criteria by placing current limiting controllers inside each battery. This also offers protection for deep discharge.

The Kimberley Kruiser System has:

  • 168Ahr Lithium Batteries (Classic), 250Ahr (Black Caviar) and an amazing 480Ahr in the Black Caviar T3 model
  • Individual battery balance, load control, and current limiting control. This eliminates the need for a complex “BMU” (Battery Management Unit)
  • 240V 60A charger with specially programmed outputs to force a effective 2 stage charge cycle
  • Solar controllers with specially programmed outputs
  • Very High capacity solar to maximize the charge rate and avoid starved Lithium Batteries
  • Battery capacity meter specially programmed for Lithium Batteries
