If you do not know what “MPPT” stands for, let us explain in one sentence:
An MPPT controller is able to convert a maximum of 97% of the rated solar panel wattage (for example 360W) of solar power to charge the battery.
For technical people, in 3 sentences:
- Solar Panels give out a high voltage so that even after the voltage loss in the cable to the battery there is enough power left to charge the batteries.
- 2. If you don’t have an MPPT controller, that surplus voltage is “wasted” and not converted.
- With an “MPPT” controller, every ounce of power is converted. That’s the difference!
This means that expensive Super-Thin Solar is more affordable and the maximum power can be extracted from the panels.
The second challenge is that the intelligent 3 stage process in our solar controller has to co-exist with the 240V controller and battery charger. Any ordinary controller will trip-out and simply not perform, but the Kimberley 30A Solar controller will lapse and wait for the 240V controller to finish.
The third challenge for Solar controllers is to match Lithium batteries. As Lithium Batteries will be standard in the Kruiser, this functionality is vitally important to protect your investment. Results on this are very encouraging with 97% of available power going to the Lithium batteries!
If the batteries are fully charge, or close to it, then the output of the solar controller will be very low.
Note that we have chosen a 60A Battery Charger for the Black Caviar Model. The Photo shows a 40a charger which is standard in the Classic Model.
